GETTING
TO THE FISHERY -- Acute Angling is dedicated to providing the
most productive fishing trips possible. This means remote locations,
far from population centers and most often quite inaccessible. Since
there are no road networks in the Amazon lowlands, getting there requires
aircraft. After your international flight and upon arrival in Manaus,
you'll collect your baggage and then proceed through customs. Our
English-speaking transfer agent will meet you as you exit. Depending
on your specific itinerary and destination, he will then transfer the entire
group of anglers on your trip to the appropriate departure point for their
specific charter flight.
Blackwater Explorer Yacht Trips
Fall Igapo Acu Yacht Trips - Travelers on our fall yacht trips
will be transferred by van to the domestic airport (in the same complex
as the International airport) for a short (45 minute) charter flight.
Depending on our location you will either arrive via floatplane or a twin
engine charter flight to the Rio Madeira town of Borba. Upon landing,
you and your baggage will be transferred to our fishing boats to be transported
to the Blackwater Explorer. Anglers typically arrive before lunch.
Rio Unini or Rio Urubaxi Yacht Trips - Travelers on our Rio Unini
or Urubaxi safari trips will be transferred by van to the domestic general
aviation airport for a charter (or commercial) terrestrial or floatplane
flight appropriate for the river on which you will be fishing. You may
land directly at the yacht on an 8-passenger Cessna Caravan float plane
or |
you may ride in one of our fishing boats for the trip to camp from a nearby
airstrip (this is dependent on the river being fished). On
some rivers, an afternoon fishing session on the day of arrival may be
possible (in addition to the 6 scheduled days), if weather and flight schedules
permit.
Floating Bungalow Safari Trips
Fall Safari Trips - Travelers on our fall safari trips will be
transferred by van to the domestic general aviation airport for a
charter (or commercial) terrestrial or floatplane flight appropriate for
the river on which you will be fishing. You may land directly at the camp
on an 8-passenger Cessna Caravan float plane or you may ride in one of
our fishing boats for the trip to camp from a nearby airstrip (this is
dependent on the river being fished). On some rivers, an afternoon
fishing session on the day of arrival may be possible (in addition to the
6 scheduled days), if weather and flight schedules permit.
Winter Float Plane Safari Trips - After arrival in Manaus, travelers
on our winter fly-in safari trips will be taken to the domestic airport
where they will board our 8-passenger Cessna Caravan float plane for the
trip to camp (typically about a 1-hour flight). Generally,
an afternoon fishing session on the day of arrival is possible after you
arrive and settle in.
For all Anglers - Weight Limits
- It is standard procedure to have your bags weighed before getting on
any of the domestic charter flights. Regional general aviation policy
limits baggage to 44 pounds per passenger (on some floatplane flights to
36 pounds). You may be required to lighten your load if your luggage
is over-weight. Our English-speaking agent will reconfirm all angler's
return international air reservations. Some points to consider for
all of the trips;
Boat Travel
-
Always use your life vest during boat runs if you do not swim or
are on a high gradient river.
-
Always use sunscreen and a hat or you could be severely burned during long
boat rides.
-
Bring along a rain suit.
-
Have insect repellent handy.
-
Make sure to drink plenty of water or other fluids to avoid dehydration.
Boats
- Many of the rivers we fish have certain similarities. We prefer
to fish productive, shallow rivers that cannot normally be accessed by
larger, deeper-draft boats. We want to exclude both the commercial
fisherman and the ever-increasing number of inexperienced sport fishing
yachts that tend to follow each other around and over-fish the same limited,
late season fisheries. (Our yacht trips are offered only during periods
which give us deep-water access to headwaters fisheries, yet remain devoid
of other craft, due to exclusivity agreements.) In order to get over
the sand bars and shallows which act as an effective barrier to most boats,
we use shallow-drafting craft exclusively. The two types of boat/motor
configurations we use most frequently are small, narrow-hulled 18',
three-passenger (two anglers plus a guide) v-hull aluminum skiffs with
a short-footed 15 or 40-horse outboard motor, or wide-hulled, flat bottom
16' aluminum tunnel boats with 40-horse motors, (these two types are the
boats you'll most likely be fishing in). We sometimes use larger,
multi-passenger, aluminum boats with larger outboard motors for transport
purposes. Tunnel boats may be used in extremely shallow water conditions,
as their design (a tunnel or cavity in the aft part of the boat) creates
a flow of water above the bottom of the boat. The propeller can therefore
function even when and if the hull of the boat is nearly touching the bottom
of the river. The narrower, v-hulled boats are used on the larger
rivers as they tend to cut through the water with minimal resistance. In
our peacock bass fisheries, the fishing boats are equipped with electric
trolling motors. All boats have ample coolers to store drinks and
lunches.
